Trump Targets Three Countries with Tariffs
US President Donald Trump has imposed new tariffs on Canada, Mexico, and China, aiming to reduce the US's $1 trillion trade deficit. While these tariffs raise concerns among key trading partners, India has not been targeted. India has strategically reduced import duties on several American products, likely avoiding being on Trump's hit list. This could pave the way for critical trade discussions during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming US visit.
Trump Targets Three Countries with Tariffs
US President Donald Trump has launched a trade war by imposing new tariffs. He has decided to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico, and 10% on China. These tariffs will come into effect starting Tuesday, leading to concerns among the US's key trading partners. Trump has targeted these three trade partners with the goal of reducing the US's $1 trillion trade deficit. However, despite his frequent criticism of India's tariff structure, India has not been targeted for now. This indicates that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to the US could serve as a platform for critical bilateral trade discussions.
India, however, is strategically handling the situation to avoid falling into the tariff trap. In the latest Union Budget (2025-26), India reduced import duties on several American products, including bikes (under 1,600cc), satellite ground installations, and synthetic flavor essence. This decision is expected to boost US exports to India, and could be seen as a step towards balancing the trade deficit between the two countries. Experts suggest that, as a result, India may not be on Trump's hit list for now.
