New Delhi: The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) report on the 'Waqf Amendment Bill-2024' will be presented before the Lok Sabha today. The bill contains 25 amendments across 14 clauses, and it spans a total of 655 pages. The JPC Chairman, Jagdambika Pal, handed over the report to the Speaker of the Lok Sabha on January 30. As a result, the Union Minister for Minority Affairs will introduce the bill in the Lok Sabha today. The JPC, chaired by Jagdambika Pal and comprising BJP MP Sanjay and others, will present the report in both Hindi and English to Parliament. They will also submit the records of the testimony provided before the JPC.

The bill has been approved by the Joint Parliamentary Committee, which includes both ruling and opposition members. However, this does not necessarily mean the opposition parties are in full support of the bill. In fact, opposition leaders in the JPC suggested 44 amendments, which were not accepted by the Chairman. On the other hand, the 14 amendments proposed by NDA members were approved by the JPC. While 16 members from the NDA endorsed these amendments, 10 opposition MPs opposed them. Therefore, when the bill is presented in the Lok Sabha, there are likely to be strong debates.

On January 29, the JPC report, comprising 655 pages, was approved by the majority of members, including suggestions from BJP members. The proposed amendments suggested by the opposition were rejected. Earlier, during a JPC meeting, the majority members endorsed the draft bill and its amendments after a vote. The amended bill received 16 votes in favor and 11 votes against. Some opposition MPs have expressed their disagreement with the draft, claiming it is unconstitutional and criticizing the short time frame provided to study the final report.
